Day Four of Portland

Sunday (Mother's Day)

Sunday was a weird day that went NOT according to our plan. We had originally decided to visit Seattle today, but when Josh proposed we go to the beach instead, we decided to take that route. In a previous trip to Disneyland, we had visited the coast, but we had been told the Pacific Northwest coast was a different look altogether.

So Sunday morning was a slow start. We dragged our feet before finally hitting the road around 11a. The drive was around 2 hours and wound it's way through the forest all the way there. Hard to argue with the scenery on this route, particularly as we are from the Southwest and don't see much greenery! The road was oftentimes shrouded by towering vegetation, in some places even overhead like a canopy. It was absolutely stunning. Occasionally, the road would pop out next to a stream and would follow beside it, beautiful! When we arrived at the coast, we stopped at an outlet mall to wait for Josh and his family to arrive, we had beat them by about 30 minutes.


After meeting up (and a quick trip into Old Navy to buy Billie some more pants - it was colder than we had expected), we headed to the beach. The beach was...well, a beach. The weather was colder, of course, and so the water was also, but the look of the beach was similar. Lots of families were in the area, as the day was bright, which balanced against the wind. Billie went crazy, running back and forth along the water, building sandcastles, and playing with Josh's sons. It was a nice day.

Lola and I sat and talked with Josh and Quinn (his wife) for a couple of hours before they had to head over to family (as it was Mother's Day). Billie continued to play, enamored with the beach, something she just doesn't see in El Paso. When we finally decided to pack it up, we gave the toys we had bought for sand castling to some kids that were playing nearby. Billie was sad, but the other kids were thrilled!


We drove back, which is never as fun as driving TO, and once back in our Airbnb, dozed off. It was a nice relaxing, lazy day.

Day 2 Austin (ACL)

 Woke up in the hotel a little earlier than the rest of the fam, so I went down to the breakfast area. I know this isn't a review site, but holy cow! the spread was above and beyond. I had some biscuits and gravy (because white), then went back to Lola and Billie to wake them up (as the breakfast was only open for another 30 minutes. They rolled out and also expressed delight at the sheer amount of quality food. Neither had biscuits and gravy though! I went to the front desk, as the ladies finished their meal, to find out when the pool opened. I was informed that the pool was closed because it was "out of season." Some stupid BS right there. We had picked this hotel with the goal of swimming in the morning, so that kind of sucked. Billie was less than thrilled. So we filled our bellies and then wandered back into the room. Day Eight of London, Amsterdam, Paris

Thursday I will not lie to you, it's been a long run already, and we've still got another 6 days to go. How terrible, right? 6 more days in Europe. I'll stop complaining. Anyway, we woke up this morning a little late. We had booked tickets into the Van Gogh Museum for 10a and when the first alarm went off at 830a, I assaulted the snooze button. Jet lag has really pushed my sleeping time back late, typically between 2-3a. So when we finally got rolling, we stepped outside to find it raining. Not as bad as London, but bad enough to slow everything down. We got to the tram station and the first tram didn't show up, so we were delayed by close to 5 minutes. I was a little worried they wouldn't let us in. I'm always worried about that sort of thing. It was no big deal and they let us in without complaint. The Van Gogh Museum is the largest collection of the artist's work in the world, I think I remember it being close to 275 of his paintings under one roof....

Day 4 of Paris 2022

The big keystone to this trip was Billie's birthday, so we were definitely going to Disneyland Paris on her birthday (3/10). Lola is a massive Disney fan and Billie is growing up in her footsteps. I didn't have much connection to Disney when I was younger, but watching my daughter and wife thrill to the parks and movies is enough to keep me coming along for the ride. And, sometimes I have a little fun of my own!  The trip out to the park is a 45 minute train ride out of the city. It's hard not to enjoy a fast train through the Parisian countryside. You can tell your headed to the right stop because they put the mickey ears on the name, you can't miss it. Billie was hopping up and down the whole way, because she's 6. It's fun to let that energy power the entire day, until it runs out of course! We arrived at the park early enough that there wasn't much of a line yet.
